About Me

Who Am I?

Hi I'm Zhoudan (Zoey) Xie. I am a senior policy analyst at the GW Regulatory Studies Center and a Ph.D. candidate in economics at the George Washington University. My research interests focus on using text as data to study the effects of regulatory policy on the aggregate level of economic activity, economic growth, and innovation. My research also covers bureaucratic behavior in regulatory processes and public participation in regulatory policy making in the U.S. and China.

Prior to my current job and PhD studies, I served as a consultant at the World Bank, where I conducted empirical economic analysis on cross-national macroeconomic and development issues. I also interned at the United Nations Environment Programme and several other international, nonprofit organizations. I hold a master’s degree in public policy (M.P.P.) from the George Washington University and a master’s degree in environmental governance from Keio University (Japan).

  • Conducted econometric analyses to examine the effects of finance, as measured by credit extended to households and firms, on the share of exports in GDP and trade balance in 42 countries over the period of 1964-2013.
  • Examined the effects of technological change on labor markets in advanced economies and emerging markets.
  • Analyzed the impact of macroeconomic and structural reforms on growth recovery from economic crises in Greece, Ireland, Portugal, and Spain.
